Case Study: Talent Liberation on Survivor Island

Nine members of the leadership team from an Asia Pacific consultancy traveled to Pulau Tiga, a paradise island off the coast of Borneo, famous for being the venue of the first Survivor Reality series. The three-day strategic planning meeting began with a Talent Liberation workshop facilitated by David Powell, a member of the Talent Team based in Southeast Asia.

The sessions started with revisiting the organization’s core values and sharing the corporate philosophy on talent. Each team member was issued a set of Talent Liberation cards and used the Talent Feedback cards to recognize and appreciate one or more talents of their colleagues, stating how these talents added value to the team. This powerful, positive feedback was then presented to each recipient.

Armed with their green Talent Liberation cards, everyone spread out around the stunning beachfront to select their reflection space. They used the Talent Liberation card format to identify some of their own talents and consider how further development and use of these talents could add value to the team and the organization.

Gathering again to share their identified talents with the rest of the group led to an incredibly powerful session. They selected specific individual talents and considered the financial value that developing and using these talents could add to the organization.

The finale of the Talent Liberation workshop was a gathering on the jetty, overlooking the beautiful blue waters and corals of the South China Sea. Each team member shared their commitments and specific actions to develop and use the recognized talents in their team and organizational development for the year.
